Deep Breathing Techniques To Enhance Relax

How many times have we been told, during particularly tense and stressful times, to calm down andbreathe deeply? What is deep breathing and why is it beneficial to brain health?

Deep breathing or diaphragmatic breathing is a process starting with air inhalation through the nostrils, continuing with its passage through the lungs with diaphragm contraction, and ending with exhalation. Unlike thoracic breathing, here chest muscles perform minimal work, because the breathing activity is mainly carried out by the diaphragm, a muscle located between the chest and the abdominal cavity.

Are there benefits to breathing this way? Scientific research says yes. By filling the lungs completely, deep breathing generates a feeling of general relaxation, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and telling the brain that we are “safe”, away from danger. And there’s more: meditating, doing yoga or performing breathing exercises outdoors, especially surrounded by nature, works even better.

Did you know? Have you ever experienced deep breathing?
